Number Fact Fluency
As a school-wide strategy, all students are working at building automaticity at math facts. In simpler terms, this means making simple operations like (1 + 2) or (4 x 6) automatic. In order to do this, we need to build on strategies that the students use and practice these strategies in an explicit way. Below are some resources you can use to practice at home, and I encourage you to try these with your child!

The following sheets are timed sheets (one minute) to help students utilize strategies and build fluency. All answers cap at 18.

If you have ever been curious as to where your child should be in terms of fact fluency, check out the following document.

Addition and Subtraction Mental Math Strategies
Students have spent the first part of the year learning mental math strategies that they can use for addition and subtraction. We have focused on three different strategies: Nearest 10/100/1000 with Compensation, Counting Up for Subtraction, and Expanding the Subtrahend for Subtraction. Below is a chart outlining each strategy and practice for each strategy.

|
|
We have also been working on using estimation as a means of setting a benchmark in order to verify our solutions. We have looked so far at Front-End Estimation as well as Rounding to the Nearest 10/100/1000.
Below are practice for all the estimation strategies.

|
Moving beyond basic facts, we have been working on adding and subtracting numbers in the 10 000s (Grade 4) and 100 000s (Grade 5). There are a number of strategies we can use to add large number, all of which are related to place value. Take a look at some of the activities below and feel free to use any of the activities for further practice.

Place Value
We've started the year with number sense, more specifically place value. A solid understanding of place value is critical to understanding math operations. If you missed a worksheet, or need more practice, check out the resources below.

|
Decimals
Moving on from place value, we have started to work with decimal numbers. Feel free to use the resources below to practice!
|
|
To use these resources, make up a few decimal numbers and have your child plot them on the number lines or build them using decimal squares. Check for understanding by seeing if they plot them or build them correctly based on value.

Fractions
Looking ahead, we will be working on fractions, specifically equivalent fractions. Use the assignments below to practice making and comparing equivalent fractions!
